![]() ![]() not going to really touch that, particularly since the final game in the series botches the whole thing quite horribly. So, you might see a bit of a RL allegory here. And then Avadon itself is attacked directly via an inside infiltrator. In the end, it turns out that most of these events had a common theme of sort, just like Redbeard, the psychotically paranoid head of the KGB CIA Avadon suspected. ![]() Regardless, you probably end up massacring the living shit out of them. So, not so much "are we the baddies" as "is pulling this shit in order to keep the peace / pact domination worth it?" In the first game, you visit a series of locations across the gameworld, in each of which the locals are like "no, we have absolutely no idea why the secret police would have a reason to come here", and eventually you uncover their plot to do real harm OR the fact that they've broken an obscure and unnecessary rule in order to survive. Some Farlands tribe thinks they should have a bit of magic to protect themselves from hostile raiders? Into the dungeons for a bit of brainwashing for the lot of you. Any ogre tribe thinks that raiding the pact is a good idea? Wiped out. Any politician even thinks about putting the needs of his homeland before those of the pact? Dead. ![]() You play an agent of Avadon, the Black Fortress - the secret police that holds the Pact together, and oppresses the Farlands. In Avadon, the five lands of the Pact are held together in a lose confederacy to defend themselves from the hostile Farlands that surround them / dominate the formerly hostile Farlands and destroy any attempt at retribution. I fairly enjoyed Avadon 1-2 (abundance of trash combat aside) and really liked Avernum 1-2 (the re-remakes, even though these are fairly dungeon-crawly - the combat system, though superficially similar to Avadon, is quite fun) Jeff Vogel, of who basically is Spiderweb games, makes retro (way retro, like pre-Baldur's Gate) RPG's, which generally have interesting-ish settings and semi-decent writing. ![]()
